Arsenal 6 v SC Braga 0

What Arsene Wenger termed a ” tricky” tie against Sporting Braga turned out to be anything but. Any 6-0 scorline would suggest total domination and total football to boot, and this was no different as the Gunners scored six times for the second time at the Emirates. But this time for Blackpool, read Braga.

Doubles from Cesc Fabregas and substitute Carlos Vela added to strikes from Andrey Arshavin and Marouane Chamakh, and it was another masterclass from the Gunners’ captain. The determination to keep hold of Wenger has been well documented, but what was not known was how Fabregas would react after overt overtures from Barcelona. Judging by his recent performances, Fabregas has been the model of professionalism, and post match interviews gave an insight into how relaxed is this Arsenal team just know.

Alex Song was being interviewed by the official Arsenal television station, and who should interrupt, but Fabregas himself. ” You score one goal and now you can talk,” joked Fabregas as Song tried to continue. Laurent Koscielny and Sebastrien Squillaci were being jointly interviewed in French, as was Chamakh in what is fast becoming a resurgence of France sur Londres. If the football continues to be as exquisite as it was here at the Emirates, then there won’t be too many questioning Wenger’s transfer policies and especially if 18 year old Jack Wilshere continues to play with the courage and determination he did here.

After Fabregas had calmly got the opner from the penalty spot after Chamakh was uppended, there seemed to be only one outcome to this game. Braga just could not muster a tackle of attack of note, and given all that space on the expansive Emirates pitch, Arsenal proceeded to thrash the Portugal side. Mid-way through the half, Fabregas crafted the Gunners’ second with some neat footwork and Arshavin applied the finishing touch.

Arsenal’s third arrived six minutes later and again Fabregas was involved. Wilshere took the pass and his clever delivery was Chamakh get his third goal of the season. Eight minmutes after the re-start, Fabregas started a move to find Fabregas on the left. His cross to the back post saw the Arsenal number four a free header to make it 4-0. Wenger took off Song and Chamakh to bring on Vela and Denilson on 63 minutes.

Six minutes after his introduction, Vela netted after Fabregas and Arhavin linked up for the Mexico forward to deftly finish over hapless Braga ‘keeper Felipe. His and that of his side’s misery was complete six minutes before the final whistle. Wilshere raked a long pass to Fabregas, who could have tried to get his hat-trick. Instead, he fed Vela who beat Felipe at his near post. Job done, 6-0 and another sparkling performance from Fabregas.
