Shakhtar Donetsk 2 v Arsenal 1

Former favourite Eduardo came back to haunt the Arsenal Champions League bandwagon, with a winner that still leaves the Gunners in need of another win to progress to the knock-out stage of this year’s competition. The Brazil born Croat added to Craig Eastmond’s own goal, after Theo Walcott had given Arsenal the lead to give Donetsk the win.

Arsenal made a lively start and Samir Nasri’s intent was obvious from early on, but his powerful drive hit the outside of the post.

However, the Gunners took the lead on 10 minutes through Theo Walcott. Shakhtar lost possession from a corner and as Walcott raced clear from Jack Wilshere’s pass, his first touch was to beat the defence, with his second a powerful strike from 20 yards that nestled into the Shakhtar net.

Looking comfortable, the Gunners were nonetheless having to put up with a much more robust Donetsk than the one that capitulated 5-1 in north London. There was almost an inevitability about their leveller, but not from this source.

Arsene Wenger has rated Eastmond very highly, and his midfield potential is obvious. When Dnytro Chgrynski rose to meet Jadson’s free-kick – Jadson had earlier hit the post – the ball came off Eastmonds head and to his and Arsenal’s horror, beyond Lukasz Fabinaski on 28 minutes. It was cruel of the young Eastmond, but a painful lesson will have been learnt.

With their tails up, Shakhtar started to pass and move with intent, just they had at the Emirates, but here was some end product. When Gael Clichy took the ball deep in his half, there seemed to be no danger. Srna however dispossessed the Gunners’ left back before feeding the unmarked Eduardo to put the home side ahead just before the break.

Wilshere had another good game at the heart of the Arsenal midfield, and when he robbed Willian, the 18 year old looked to level, but his shot went wide. Sebastien Squillaci then had another chance to bring Arsenal level, but he headed Nasri’s cross at Pyatov, as the Gunners were beaten for the first time in this season’s Champions League.
