Having given an assured performance in goal in Arsenal’s unexpected 0-0 stalemate at Villa Park on Saturday, Wojciech Szczesny accepted that he was happy with having kept a clean sheet, if not entirely happy with the final scoreline.

In atrocious conditions ,and on a wet surface, Szczesny was made several top class saves to ensure the Gunners didn’t depart Villa Park empty handed, against an Aston Villa side determined to exorcise that 5-0 mauling to Manchester City seven days earlier.

” When you play away from home it’s always very tough. They made very difficult for us today and as I said they did very well and we found them hard to break through but I thought we’d defended very well and managed to get a clean sheet which is the least you can ask for when you play away from home, ” reflected Szczesny.

The Poland ‘keeper was called into action on several occasions denying Gabriel Agbonlahor, Andreas Weiman and then produced the save of the game, when tipping Brett Holman’s viscous shot onto his bar, as Villa stifled Arsenal ‘s creativity at every turn:

” It was a very tough game, probably as tough as it gets. They pressed us high they worked really hard and we couldn’t break through and in the end probably we’d taken the draw and happy with a clean sheet but that’s the only positive . When you play away from home it’s always very tough, ” noted Szczesny on Villa’s determination.

Arsene Wenger felt that his players were feeling fatigued after Arsenal’s 5-2 north London derby win over Spurs followed by the 2-0 Champions League Group B win over Montpellier, which his keeper also reflected on, as well as the need to build confidence .

” The last two games against Tottenham and Montpellier we were solid defensively , played really well, offensively we played very well , scored seven goals in two games , so that was positive .

” It’s getting better, we’ve had a couple of disappointing performances before that , so it’s important we get our confidence back get the performance levels back to where it should be and I think we’re on a good path to do so well keep going,” said the 22 year old.

Next up for Arsenal is the trip to Goodison Park where an in form Everton await. Szczesny acknowledged that the Toffees ‘ fixture is a six pointer, and he knows that his side will be in for another battle, with both sides eyeing a Champions League spot for next season.

” At the moment we are out of the top four. Our first target is to reach the top four but the ambitions are much higher than that . We’ve managed to get a couple of good results recently a good clean sheet away from home today so we hope we can go to another tough game at Everton.

” We’ll just take it game by game and hope for the best. At the moment it’s all about climbing up the table and hopefully doing well in all the other competitions as well.

” They’re above us in the table at the moment so it would be very important to get the three points. We had a good win there (Goodison Park) last year after a very tough game so so hope we can repeat the performance and the result. We can go to Everton and do the job properly so were still confident we can get the three points.”
