Greek defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos has joined Arsenal for a fee reportedly around the £18m mark. The experienced 30-year-old arrives from Borussia Dortmund, where he won the German Cup in 2017. The defender also played at Werder Bremen, AC Milan, Genoa and AEK Athens. Papastathopoulos will wear the No 5 shirt at Arsenal and has been capped 79 times for Greece. He described his signing for the Gunners as a “beautiful moment,” and added “I’m very happy that I will be here for the next years. Arsenal is one of the three biggest teams in the Premier League and one very big club. It has a lot of fans and a very big history. I’m very happy that for the next years I will be here to help the team.

The signing who is Unai Emery’s third since taking over from Arsene Wenger, will add defensive steel to a back line which has been found out too many times in the recent past. With Konstantinos Mavropanos having some impressive displays at the end of last season, could we see an all Greek defensive pairing this season? There will be plenty of options for Unai Emery, his captain Laurent Koscielny and Shrodran Mustafi will have to fight for their places which can only be a positive.

Papastathopoulos will see some familiar faces in the Arsenal dressing room, he was team mates with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan at Dortmund, and he revealed their advice was helpful in making the move.

“I spoke (to them) a lot times. They said to me the best things about this club, that it is one big family and of course they also called me not every day but a lot of times telling me to come here.”

The trio joined Dortmund in 2013 under Jurgen Klopp and those established could be crucial in the Premier League.

“It’s a little bit (strange) but it’s also very beautiful that I’ve come to one team but I also have two players who I was together with for a lot of years. I know them both very well and I’m very happy,” continued Papastathopoulos, who has something of an obsession on defending and that is exactly what Arsenal have needed.

“I’m a normal defender who likes to defend. I like that my team doesn’t (concede) goals and I like the zero in the defence of course. I will do everything to help achieve these goals.”

We look forward to that.
