Lucas Torreira has joined Arsenal in a reported £26m deal and becomes the fourth signing of Unai Emery’s tenure. Rumours linking the Uruguayan with a summer switch to Arsenal had been present up to and during the World Cup in Russia. Torreira however refused to be drawn on the matter, preferring to focus on his country’s World Cup campaign. Compact, robust and with a never say die attitude, Torreira will be a welcome midfield addition, in front of his back line as we saw so ably demonstrated in Uruguay’s World Cup campaign which included the elimination of Portugal. Safely on the ground in N5, the midfielder said “I feel very happy. I want to make the most of this opportunity life has given me. I am really looking forward to starting this new adventure.”

The 22 year old signed a five year deal and will meet up with his new team mates after his post 2018 World Cup holiday. The midfielder established himself after left his native Uruguay in 2013 and went on to make his name in Europe with Pescara and Sampdoria before starring at this year’s World Cup.

Torreira’s capture could prove to be significant in an area of the pitch from which have dominated offensively, however defensively it has been another matter. The Arsenal fans are very excited with this signing and had been tracking Torreira’s flight until it arrived in the UK. Torreira will wear the number 11 shirt and can’t wait to meet his new fans.

“I’ve been receiving loads of messages in my social media accounts. I guess it’s all down to the fact there were talks of me moving to Arsenal even before the World Cup started. I am very happy and I hope I can meet all the fans very soon.

“I feel calm. I am used to coping with this kind of thing in the best possible way. It’s a very positive thing that people want to welcome me. It makes me feel comfortable. Now I am calm and I look forward to the future, which for sure will be very nice.”
