Arsenal 4 FC Vorskla 2
Aubameyang 32, 56, Welbeck 48, Ozil 76, Chesnakov 77, Sharpar 90

Arsenal got their Europa League campaign off to a perfect start with a win against Ukrainian side FC Vorskla. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored a classy double with Danny Welbeck and substitute Mesust Ozil adding to the four goal tally. Arsenal head coach Unai Emery has won the Europa League three times, and will be pleased with what he saw as the Gunners aim to go one better than reaching last season’s semi-final in this competition. Berndt Leno made his Arsenal debut, with Lucas Torreira making his first Arsenal start under Emery. Leno looked composed and comfortable to play out from the back and that will have heartened Emery who is keen to also adapt this philosophy in the Premier League. While Leno did concede two late Vorskla strikes, they were mere consolations as Arsenal were too far in the ascendency for that to have mattered at that stage.

Settling into the game took a while with the goal Arsenal’s football deserved arriving just after the half hour mark. The move was classical Arsenal. Henrikh Mkhitaryan broke out from deep and fed Alex Iwobi. His cross from the left was met by Aubameyang who struck first time past Vorskla keeper Bhodan Shust. Iwobi seems to be relishing life under Emery.

The Nigeria international looks fitter and stronger and his combination with Mkhitaryan was causing Vorskla all sorts of problems. Shust palmed over Mkhitaryan’s effort, and Aubameyang also hit the post as the Gunners sensed more goals.

They doubled their lead three minutes after the break, Welbeck heading home from Mkhitaryan’s cross. The England striker went close again after good work from Aubameyang, and the Gabon striker then went close with a volley just over the bar. But the former Borussia Dortmund man added Arsenal’s third and his  second of the night, curling home from Mkhitaryan’s well weighted assist.

When Ozil came off the bench to stab in from Stephan Lichtsteiner’s cross to the far post to make it 4-0, the Gunners superiority was further confirmed and maybe they back off Vorskla got a late double with Chesnakov and Sharpar hitting the target.

Arsenal next travel to Qarabag FK on 4th October where they’ll be aiming for another three points in Group E.
