Times when we used to chuckle at our capital cousins have long gone. Knowing that despite the circumstances, Arsenal would always prevail had been the hallmark of the Arsene Wenger era, and if there was going to be a loss, the Arsenal fans were comforted in the knowledge that the wins would always outnumber those days when you wondered what just happened. Well, if you amplify the "what just happened," theory to cover the last seven years, not only have we had to accept that our beloved red and white heroes are having to fight with limited resources at their disposal, but shock horror, another London club has had the temerity to claim the first ever European capital crown. The woe doesn't cease their either, as further up the M6, another billionaire with deeper pockets has just won the Premiership title.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain received a shock call up for the England Euro 2012 squad, and expressed his delight after hearing the good news from Roy Hodgson.

"I'm obviously delighted, to be picked for your country at any stage is a massive honour and to be at a huge tournament likes the Euros is such a bonus.
Arsene Wenger spoke of his pride in Arsenal's third place Premiership finish which seals an automatic Champions League place for next season. The Gunners had to rally to fight off a spirited West Bromwich Albion last Sunday, who had wanted to give Roy Hodgson the perfect send off with a win. For a time the battling Baggies had that ambition in their sights, but goals from Yossi Benayoun, Andre Santos and Laurent Koscielny saw off the Midlands' side who had Shane Long and Graham Dorrans on the score-sheet. Kieran Gibbs vital late block from Billy Jones preserved the Gunners' 3-2 lead, with Wenger later revealing that Wojciech Szczesny had been playing with a shoulder injury for the past five weeks.

West Bromwich Albion 2 Arsenal 3

It was always going to be a nervous afternoon at the Hawthorns. In front of a raucous West Bromwich Albion crowd determined to give Roy Hodgson a deserved send off before he takes up his new post as England coach, Arsenal had the not so insignificant task of needing to get a win to ensure Champions League qualification next season. The win was achieved, but it was a nervous Arsenal display, with the hitherto confident Wojciech Szczesny having one of those games that used to be the trademark of his predecessor.

After 44 years with the north London club, Rice will retire and says Wenger he will be much missed. "Thank you Pat, we’ll miss you and all of us wish you and your family the best of health and happiness for the future. When I first arrived at Arsenal, Pat was always there and taught me so much about this great club. Pat has been amazing for me over the past 16 years, " said Wenger.
Arsenal 3 Norwich City 3

Those dark days that so afflicted Arsenal's season opening, appear to have made an untimely comeback in their season run in. Losses to strugglers Queens Park Rangers and Wigan with tame draws at Stoke and at home Chelsea has not been the form that Arsene Wenger would have demanded. And now the latest chapter in the most forgetful of seasons sees the Gunners' Champions League ambitions no longer in their control. The dramatic 3-3 against Norwich at the Emirates could have sounded the death knell of Arsenal playing in Europe's top club competition, as Wenger now requires favourable results from Manchester City and Aston Villa against Newcastle and Spurs respectively. Even a double strike from Robin Van Persie which saw him reach the 30 Premiership goal tally for the season, could not save Arsenal from a spirited Norwich who played with poise and purpose and never gave up.

Arsene Wenger insisted that he will do everything in his power to ensure that Robin Van Persie signs a new contract at Arsenal. Having lost key players prior to and then shortly after the start of the current season, the Arsenal manager has moved quickly to ensure his side is strengthened by not only signing Lukas Podolski, but also remained resolute in his ambitions to keep hold of the Gunners' captain. Van Persie was presented the FWA footballer of the year award at a presentation in London on Thursday evening, and all indications are that with his wife and young family settled in the capital, the 28 year old will stay at the club he calls a family.

The mathematics are simple enough, even for those of us who struggled with either the pure or applied version of the subject. However, six points from two wins from their final two fixtures, starting with Norwich at the Emirates this Saturday, and then followed by the trip to West Bromwich on the final day of the Premiership season will see Arsenal secure third place, despite whatever occurs below them. Chelsea's home loss to Newcastle almost rendered their Champions League ambitions to their lifting the trophy against Bayern Munich in Germany on May 19th, with the Magpies and also Spurs in the running to test the nerves of Arsene Wenger's side.

Stoke City 1 Arsenal 1

Robin Van Persie netted his 28th Premiership goal of the season to salvage a hard won point at the Britannia Stadium. The Holland striker levelled after Peter Crouch had seen the home side take the lead on 9 minutes, with yes you guessed it, the aerial route from Matthew Ethrington's cross. There was only really one side who wanted to win this game, and whereas to the low expectations of of the home fans it suited Stoke not to lose, the Gunners should have been rewarded for their efforts with a late penalty claim when Glenn Whelan clearly bundled over Yossi Benayoun. Referee Chris Foy will accept that he made a howler of a decision, however a point at a venue that plays a game suited to the NBA will be some crumb of comfort to Arsene Wenger's side.
